In recent years there have been many new companies claiming to produce "fishing maps." However, not all claims of being a "fishing map" are all together accurate and warranted. The vast majority of these new products are not much more than standard lake maps or, in some cases, enhanced lake maps. So what's the difference between a lake map and a fishing map? Good question. Let's take a look at what makes a map a "fishing map" and not a lake map.
First and foremost, a fishing map must address, you guessed it, fishing. Every Fishing Hot Spots (FHS) map contains information about the lake that is important to anglers. From forage base and water quality information to fishery information, fishing tips and specific marked fishing areas, FHS maps provide you with the information you need to be more successful on the water, in pursuit of your favorite species. No other map available gives you as much fishing information as and FHS map.
On the other side of the spectrum, these new companies provide little more than a contour map of the lake - which does very little to help you catch more fish as they do not tell you about forage, weed growth, preferred baits for the lake and seasonal patterns of the primary game fish species. Some of the new lake contour maps available claim to be fishing maps based on a lake survey to determine bottom structure. This "detailed" picture of the bottom structure of the lake does not help fishing and, in many cases, the way they are depicted on the map actually obscures your ability to see the change in lake bottom as several contour lines usually run together and become illegible. Are illegible contour lines helpful? Usually not.
Other maps currently calling themselves "fishing maps" serve more to promote advertising than they do to promote your fishing. Far too often other map companies have sacrificed detail, content and legibility in order to place more ads on their maps. Does advertising help you fish? We didn't think so. Fishing Hot Spots does not place any advertising on our maps. Our focus is producing the most useful and informative fishing map available on the market today and we will not jeopardize that to accommodate advertisers on our products.
Ask yourself what you expect from a fishing map and chances are that you will discover that Fishing Hot Spots maps meet most, if not all, of your expectations. The thoroughly researched lake information, fishing tips and techniques and quality cartography provided on all FHS maps are put together by anglers for you, a fellow angler. Don't be confused about lake maps masquerading as "fishing maps." Take the time to evaluate each product available and see for yourself why Fishing Hot Spots maps have been America's Fishing Map for over 30 years.
